In simple terms, hypnosis describes a state in which someone’s body becomes completely relaxed, which their mind is calm, concentrated and aware – rather like being totally absorbed in an exciting movie. This altered state of consciousness is used as effective therapy in range of physical problems, including Weight Loss.
We all go into these natural trance states every day – daydreaming, forgetting chunks of a car journey or getting wrapped up in a book. A hypnotherapist’s voice and visualizations can gently guide you into this wonderful relaxation, which often produces a tremendous sense of well-being.
Does it work? Will I actually lose weight?
Hypnosis for weight loss works by changing your habits and patterns. So, one of the first effects you'll start noticing is that you'll enjoy emotional eating less and less. And after a while, you won't find any joy in that midnight snack, and might even want to replace it with a healthy snack.
Another common effect is more energy to do work, and an increased metabolic rate. That way, you'll burn more fat each day because of the increased number of activities. So, weight loss for hypnosis works indirectly - by tweaking your lifestyle and habits.
Now, each person is unique and will take a different amount of time to show results. And even after all the suggestions in the world, you could conceivably choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle. But hypnosis will make it less likely - it's a safe, gentle technique to change your habits.
Is it safe? Can everyone be hypnotized?
Yes and yes. We are always protected by our subconscious mind and will either drift off to sleep or wake up refreshed at the end of a hypnosis session. But be careful, you should only listen to the program in a safe environment and never while operating a vehicle or machinery that may cause harm to you or others.
Hypnosis is like day-dreaming. If you can let your mind drift off and relax in your normal life, you’re capable of being comfortably hypnotized.
What happens during the hypnosis audio recording session?
First, every hypnosis session will begin with an initial relaxation called induction. This is usually some sort of breathing exercise, calming visualization or counting down. Induction allows you to relax your body from its usual tense state so your body can grab 20 minutes of peaceful healing, and your mind resolve its issues on a deeper level.
That is followed by the main body of the hypnosis session which works to reframe problems in your mind, retrain your body to work smoothly and help spark the healing process. This section usually contains metaphorical stories, indulging visualizations and thought provoking discussions. In this weight loss hypnosis session, it also contains embedded commands for you to eat and live healthier.
If you’re awake during a hypnosis session, your conscious mind will be able to follow the directions being given in that session. If you drift in and out of sleep, then relax and let the process work itself. Your subconscious mind is catching everything and will apply it at a relevant time. Always remember that your mind serves to protect you.
Finally, after 15-30 minutes of the hypnosis session, the session will gradually come to an end. The voice on the audio will encourage you to come back to the room and awaken. However, if you’ve fallen asleep, you can continue to drift deeper.
No, although almost all hypnotists/hypnotherapists use the word ’sleep’ during an induction, it is purely a signal to get the mind to relax very deeply, sometimes referred to as ‘hypnotic sleep’ You may look as if you are asleep but your mind will remain very clear and in control.
In fact your will be in a state of heightened awareness focusing on your inner world and reality rather than unconscious. In the therapeutic context the aim of the hypnotherapist is to bring into the open your own inner wisdom and this can only be activated if you are fully conscious.
Of course, if you're listening to these audio recordings at a safe, comfortable place - you could choose to drift off to sleep. The effect of the recordings will be much greater if you're consciously listening - but if you've made this a regular habit - you can occassionally drift off and let your subconscious gather a different set of subliminal messages.
Will a moment arrive when I am not under control?
No, quite the opposite. This is the biggest, most widespread myth about hypnosis. Powerful changes are made but only ones that you want. In fact, you will enjoy a definite feeling of increased control.
Nobody can be hypnotized against their will. There is a myth that weak willed or simpler people respond more easily. In fact, statistics show that hypnotisability usually increases with intelligence.
People go in and out of trances every day and are not aware of it. Have you ever travelled from A to Z by car and wondered how you ended up at your destination? This was an altered state of awareness.
You just feel mentally very, very calm and content, relaxed, focused, and alert, sounds initially become extremely intense as though planes or trains are literally in the room with us and then they drop as background noises. Another component is that everything slows downtime distortion is very common at the end of the session you might feel time went by unusually quickly or slowly.
You may experience initially your throat becoming very dry and sometimes your body temperature will drop slightly. It is though a very relaxing and refreshing experience.
Will I remember anything afterwards?
Yes, almost certainly you will. Even people, who have been able to have operations under hypnosis, and have felt no pain, will often chat about the experience afterwards (and during!). Occasionally people recall very little or nothing, rather like occasions when you cannot recall much or any of a dream.
Is this a replacement to a doctor’s advice or medicines?
NO. You must see a doctor to ensure any radical diet, exercise or medicine changes you undertake are okay. You could have any number of conditions, and it's worth the effort always consult a medical specialist if you suspect your problems have a medical cause.
